The mission of the Public Relations & Community Engagement Office is to ensure regular, two-way communication between Brownsville ISD and its stakeholders and to promote the district as a professional, responsive and well-managed organization dedicated to ensuring the highest possible achievement of its students.

Public Information

The Brownsville Independent School District, as a local governmental entity, is subject to the requirements of the Texas Public Information Act.

How to Request Public Information

Your request must be in writing and addressed to the Officer for Public Information. Only written requests trigger a governmental body's obligations under the Public Information Act. Requests made by facsimile or electronic mail must be addressed to the Officer for Public Information in order to trigger an obligation under the Texas Public Information Act.

  • Provide your full name and contact information including
  • Address
  • Telephone number
  •  email/or fax (if available). 
  • Provide a heading for your correspondence that reads “Public Information Request.”
  • Provide a detailed, precise description of the nature and scope of information you are seeking.
  • Requests should be for documents or other information that is already in existence. 

Governmental bodies are not required to answer questions, perform legal research, create new information, or comply with a continuing request to supply information on a periodic basis as such information is prepared in the future.

Please cooperate with Brownsville ISD's reasonable efforts to clarify the type or amount of information requested.

Section 552.234(c) allows a governmental body to designate one mailing address and one electronic mail address for receiving written requests for public information.

Please Note:

  • In most instances, a governmental body is required to request a decision from the Attorney General in order to withhold information from a requestor. However, a requestor may permit a governmental body to redact information without requesting an Attorney General decision. You are not required to agree to the redaction of any information responsive to your request, but doing so may streamline the handling of your request. If you agree to redactions in your request, then you may request the redacted information in a future information request.

 

  • Chapter 552 of the Texas Government Code) provides the authority under which a member of the public may access government records without question as to the use of the information. However, certain information is protected from disclosure under the exceptions in the Act, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and other constitutional, statutory or judicial decisions.
