We celebrated being Drug-Free during  Red Ribbon Week with many activities.
 

Halloween came at the end of Red ribbon week.  The theme for the day was "Say Boo to Drugs."

Students, teachers, administrators, and parents had a great time!

 
Monday's theme was "United We Stand", and so we wore red, white and blue.
 
Thursday's theme was "Follow Your Dreams". 

Getting ready for school was easy that day because we got to wear our pajamas to school!

 

 
We "Walked Out On Drugs" with an early morning Walk-a-thon.
 
"Boot Out Drugs" was the theme for Tuesday, October 30.
 
Drug awareness activities were also part of the Red Ribbon Week.
 
"Put a Lid On Drugs" was our theme on Wednesday, October 24.  We all wore hats.
 
Fifth grade students recently participated in Kid's Voting. 

Instead of getting grades, this time students were the ones giving grades to Mayor Pat Ahumada.

All students K-5 come to the computer lab to learn how computers work and how they can use them to make tasks easier.

 

 
The Red Raider (Mr. Leo Bennett from Mr. Gatti's Pizza) was on campus to give "Hugs" to students who were recognized by their teachers for their excellent behavior.
 
Mr. Rick Williams, Corporate Manager for Peter Piper Pizza was the Red Raider presenting "Hugs" to students who were chosen for their outstanding behavior.

 

 
The Brownsville Fire Department spent a morning during Fire Prevention Week teaching us about fire safety.

Lieutenant Geronimo Sheldon of the Brownsville Fire Department (left) is also an Assistant Chief with  the Los Fresnos Volunteer Fire Department. 

He not only talks to students in Brownsville, but during Fire Prevention Week he uses his days off to teach students in the Los Fresnos schools about fire safety.

Principal Harris thanks Judge Black for taking time from his busy schedule to be a presenter. We are only in the fifth grade, but we need to be looking toward our future!
   
Another recent event was the Buddy Fun Meet held at Sam's Stadium.
 Hey look!  It's the Mighty Red Raiders!  It was a bright sunny day.
 Everyone was participating.   And everyone was having a good time too.
 Wiggle those hips!  A red hoop for a Red Raider!
 Basketball time. It's a slam dunk!
 Hoops and Frisbees are a good combination.
 A bean bag toss is always fun. You had to bring your own shade.
   
The Vermillion chess team participated in a chess meet.

Vermillion Road Elementary students recently participated in the UIL competition hosted by Gonzalez Elementary.
Students, parents, coaches, and supporters were all in attendance.
Some of the coaches are seen with the Event's Coordinator, Mrs. D. Gonzalez and her husband, Marco. Mr. Ybarra is pictured with some of the coaches.

Mrs. Donna Olvera's class recently visited the Gladys Porter Zoo.
Here is the whole class, ready to go! The gorillas were down in the water.
It was a perfect day for a field trip! The sea Lions were taking a nap in the sun.
Ashley got to hold a ferret! Leivy touches the ferret.  It has soft fur!
Now it was Kevin's turn to pet the ferret. Mikey thought the ferret looked like a an armadillo.
Franchesca didn't want to touch the animals. Galilea wasn't afraid to touch the ferret.
Anahi uses a soft touch to pet the ferret. What's this?  A SNAKE!
Mrs. Donna touched the snake, but she was a little scared. Danny from the zoo knows a lot about the animals.
Mrs. Garza wants Franchesca to say hello to the baby camel. The camel whispers hello to Anahi!
Ms. Charles can talk to the animals "This is my best side", said the camel.

Vermillion Elementary Staff and family members participated in the Relay for Life this past Saturday and Sunday. 

It is pretty evident that everyone had a great time while promoting a great cause.
 
Students from Mrs. Chapa's class celebrated the 50th Birthday of Dr. Seuss Part of the celebration was a delicious breakfast of... green eggs and ham!

Mrs. Chapa's class is also pictured flying  kites, but it wasn't just for fun. 

They learned a lot of math, including: making word problems in TAKS format, measuring the height and perimeter of the kite, and graphing whether the kite stayed in the air, crashed to the ground, or got caught on the roof. 

   
Kinder and Pre-K student recently celebrated the 100th day of school this year.
Crowns adorned with 100 items were the thing to be wearing.  These students are from Mrs Quesada's class.
There were several activities involving the number 100.
Mrs. Pomar's students had some great masks. The caterpillar is getting longer!
Everyone was busy making a special "100" item.
Necklaces were very popular. We are looking forward to day 101!
 
 Fifth grade students from Vermillion recently had an opportunity to learn about band at the Middle school.  They were invited to Garcia Middle School for an introduction and demonstration.
Everyone was excited to here the Garcia Band. Vermillion students were entertained by the Garcia Middle School Band.

Just before Christmas Ms. Cortez's class wrote letters to Santa. They decided to send them to the North Pole by "Air Mail".
Everyone is ready for the release. We spread out so the balloons didn't get tangled.
Off they go! I wonder if they got what they asked for?
Mrs. Dippong's 5th grade class was dressed in red to mark the start of Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week reminds us of the dangers of drugs.  Mrs. Regalado's students had some great messages.
Mrs. Martinez-Chapa spoke to the students during the Red Ribbon Rally. Rivera's percussionists performed at the rally.
Brazilian Jin-Jitsu presenter, Johnny Garcia spoke to the students about saying no to drugs and yes to health activities. Johnny Garcia and his son Mason demonstrated some Marshal Arts skills.
Juvenile Probation Officer, Carlos Perez, had an important message for the students Marco Hernandez and the Rivera cheerleaders got the rally jumping.
Administrators and Counselors kept the rally rocking!
The Mighty Raider makes a grand entrance. The Vermillion students enjoyed the rally.
The Rivera cheerleaders danced and performed a variety of special cheers.
We had a full house. One of the Rivera percussionist had a great message.

The student in the pictures below put the needs of others first when they participated in the recent Heart Walk.  Through their participation, they raised money to be use for research and treatment.  Ms. Sullivan was the sponsor  for the Heart Walk.
Fifth grade students had the opportunity to learn about a variety of careers when they attended a Career Day presentation on Wednesday, September 21, 2006.
The Brownsville Events Center hosted the Career Day. Mr. Garcia from BISD talked about the arts.
The Brownsville Police Department spoke to the students.
The Brownsville Fire Department was there as well. Mr. Roy Alaniz of BISD talked to the students about wellness.
Here is the Peter Piper Mascot. Magic Valley Electric Co-operative presented information in the area of electrical distribution.
Denny's was there to teach us about careers in the restaurant business.
U.S. Customs had a very interesting presentation. The presentation by BISD's television station KBSD was very interesting.
Ladd's T-shirts told us about making custom T-shirts. Jesse Vallejo spoke to us about careers in the Marshal Arts.
The DJ's  display was a big hit with the students.

Vermillion Road Elementary School held the official ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, September 15, 2006,   marking the opening of our new library.
Librarian, Ms. Porras, spoke to the assembled guests. Area Assistant Superintendent, Mrs. Berta Pena, also spoke to the invited guests.
Watch for our opening on KBSD-TV. Students from each grade level were invited to the opening.
Principal Martinez-Chapa cut the ribbon, marking the official opening of our library. Here is Ms. Porras with some of our beautiful children.
After the ribbon cutting, students and guests were treated to some refreshments.
Everyone enjoyed the beautiful cake. Here are some of our other guests.
The new library is MUCH larger then the old one. It was a day that made us happy.
The new library has a whole row of new computers. Everyone was curious to check out every part of our new library.
The big windows really brighten up the library. The Red Raider Mascot also came to our opening.

We were very glad that Area Assistant Superintendent, Mrs. Berta Pena was able to be here for our opening. Our custodians will be in charge of keeping our new library clean and shiny!

 The fifth grade students had their annual awards assembly on Tuesday, May 23.  Many proud parents and grandparents were in attendance.  The awards presentation was hosted by Judge Janet Leal.
   
The Vermillion Elementary Chess Team recently made an exciting trip to Denver, Colorado to participate in a chess tournament.  Members of the K-3 Team are: Christian Flores (won 2 matches), Carlos Salazar (won 3 matches), Julio Martinez (won 3 matches), and Ellan Guillen (won 4 matches.  Christopher Zuniga (won 3 matches) was a member of the K-3 Championship Team.  Jose F. Zuniga (won 3 matches) was a member of the K-5 Team.

The trip was made possible with money raised through three fund raisers:  Jeans for Chess, brisket plates, and two school dances.  These activities raised $3,000.  The PTO also donated $1,000.  The chess team would like to thank the PTO and all who supported the fund raisers.

Mrs. Knoch retired this year after 29 years of teaching.  Enjoy your retirement Mrs. Knoch. Ms. Gloria Flores and Mrs. Rosie Gonzalez were both honored for 20 years of service with the district.

Bantam Division boys were eager to get to the stadium.  Carol Carbajal, Marla Aguilar, Monica Castro, and Jackie Valles are happy to be part of the Vermillion Track Team.
Mrs. Camarillo, Assistant Principal, was there to support the students. Isreal Acero, Christopher Mata, and Jesus De La Fuente are waiting for their chance to compete.

 4th place winners in the Junior Division relay race are: Miroslava Almaguer, Itali Fernandez, Yajaida Garcia, and Genesis Ureno. Coach Castillo is pictured with 1st place winners in the Bantam division relay race: Carol Carbajal, Monica Castro, Marla Aguiler, and Jocelyn Arriaga.   
Yajaida Garcia and Itati Fernandez competed in the long jump.  They earned 3rd and 4th place. 2nd place winners in the Bantam Division relay race are: Jaime Zuniga, Ricardo Vasquez, Christopher Montes, and Jesus De La Fuente.
Ms. Salazar, kindergarten teacher and parent of Charlie Salazar was there to support our team. Irene Martinez is lacing up her shoes before the race.
Mr. Herrera, our librarian assistant, was also getting ready to compete in the Coaches' relay race. Here is the hand off from Mr. Herrera to Coach Castillo.  The Vermillion Red Raider Coaches' team proudly represented Vermillion and won 1st place in the relay!
Vermillion second grade student recently participated in the BISD PE Demonstration. Everyone was excited as we got to Rivera High School.

Mrs. Montiel's, Mrs. Trevinos's, and Mrs. Salazar's classes had a fun and educational trip to the Mesquite Farms.  They later stopped at Lincoln Park for an Easter egg hunt.
Mrs. Trevino's class visited the zoo and had lunch at Peter Piper .
Mrs. Pomar's and Mrs. Flores' classes also visited the Mesquite Farms.
Mrs. Pomar's and Mrs. Flores' classes had a great time hunting Easter eggs and playing.
 
Vermillion Elementary was well represented at the Relay for Life held April 1 and 2 at Sam's Stadium Over $1,000 was raised to help fight cancer.

Vermillion students participated in a Robotics Saturday Academy on January 28, 2006. After the opening instructions the teams got busy.

The Vermillion Choir entertained students and staff with Christmas songs.  The Choir was lead by Ms. I. Pena.
   
Vermillion third grade students had a great learning experience at the Brownsville Children's Museum
 Lots of hands-on learning.  We're learning AND having fun, too!

 We learned cooperation.  It's a dear, on a Deere!
 You can tell we're having fun.  A building project is going well.

Second grade students visited the zoo this week. It was a great day to visit the zoo.
We are happy to be at the zoo, and we are learning a lot! The animals were fascinating.

A great time was had by everyone. We learned a new skill by watching the monkeys!

The Week of the Young Child

 Ms. Trevino's and Ms. Watson's classes visited the Mesquite Farm Ranch.  We came face to face with goats.  (The kids met the kids.)
 The llama wanted to read Ms. Alegria's name tag.  Here is a contented cow.
 Let's get some milk!  This is cool.  We get milk without going to the store.
 We were learning while having fun.  Everyone was in the barn.
 We learned where wool comes from.  We got to help shear the sheep.
 This is too cool, but I hope the sheep doesn't get too cool! We got to feed the horse. (He was as hungry as a horse.)
 A tree and an old tire on a rope can be a lot of fun.  Time for a hay ride.

 KGBT Channel 4 News Reporter, Marco Gonzalez, reported live from Vermillion Elementary.   The Vermillion Elementary dancers performed live on Channel 4 the morning of February 24, 2005
 The students appeared several times during the newscast.  Ms. Dalia Marroquin, 2nd grade teacher, and Marco Gonzalez danced, too.
 Marco Gonzalez enjoyed being here at Vermillion, and he's a great dancer!  Great costumes, great dancing, great students!

The whole school went to Rivera H.S. for a TAKS rally. The Rivera Cheerleaders led some cheers.
The Rivera dance team performed for us. Here are the Rivera drummers.
Prekinder teachers and teacher assistants performed a dance wearing great costumes. Who is who?
Next up was the Kinder Teachers. All the kinder students knew the cheer.
 Now it was time for the first grade. First grade teachers can dance!
Great message! We are all waiting for the next group.
It is the second grade teachers! Watch out!  You don't want to get hit!
It was now time for the third grade teachers. What are these Raiders up to?
There is the message...Raid the TAKS! There sure are a lot of students at Vermillion.
Here come the fourth graders. Fourth grade teachers and students were performing.
Ms. Barrera was really excited about TAKS! The fifth grade teachers lead us in a cheer.
They got the whole crowd cheering! Now it was time for the office staff to perform.
Who is that? They have our attention!
The show ended with Ms. Martinez ON A MOTORCYCLE! "V" for victory for Vermillion students on the TAKS!
Fifth grade students attended the Career Days presentation. UTB presented to the students.
The Border Patrol had a great presentation. The US Army was very interesting.
HEB Photo Lab employees had our attention. Here are the scholarship winners to  the Kids College - UTB.

We had a great presentation, Science in the Movies. Everyone got to go to the mini-gym.

The Vermillion Chess Team participated in the District Tournament on Jan. 29, 2005. It takes a lot of practice.
 Students enjoy practicing.
Parents and teachers supported the team.

The PreK classes celebrated 100 days in school. Class activities centered around the number 100.
We are ready for another 100 days! 100 days, 100 smiles!
Decorated crowns followed the theme of 100. Students made necklaces with 100 "jewels".
 Vermillion Road Elementary School received a $1,000 donation from Wal-Mart.

Ms. Martinez started her day in the cafeteria. Ms. Martinez visited many rooms.

Students were interviewed by reporter Marco Gonzalez of KGBT. Marcy Martinez is the sister of our principal, Marisa Martinez.  Do you see the resemblance?  
We are happy you came to spend the day with us. Ms. Martinez was happy to be here, too.

After watching The Polar Express it was time to eat. Everyone was having a great time.
We like the cafeteria, but this is special. The food will be here soon.
We're all ready for the Reindeer Revue. Ms. Martinez likes to dance.
Vermillion students can put on a show too. It's almost time!
We all sang Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Dr. Zolkoski performs for us.
Good job, Ms. Gomez! Mr. Guevara didn't know he'd be a star.
All the performers did a great job. Santa came to visit.
Frosty was there, and he was cool. Dr. Zolkoski was having a good time.
