Samuel Hjort

Assistant Director of Bands, Director of Concert Band I, Low Brass Specialist, Color Guard Coordinator

Mr. Hjort started in 2010 as the low brass specialist at Lopez High School. He attended Valdosta High School under the direction of Steve Hankla and was a member of the Georgia All-State Band, Georgia Lions All-State Band, and Georgia Honors Low Brass. Mr. Hjort received his Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Georgia in May of 2010. While at UGA, he studied tuba with Mr. David Zerkel and conducting with Dr. David Kish, Dr. David Romines and Mr. Tom Keck. He has also taken part in masterclasses and private lessons with many other world-class musicians including Joe Alessi, Fred Mills, Sam Pilafian, Pat Sheridan, Demondre Thurman, and Brian Bowman. While in college, he was a member of the Redcoat Marching Band, Derbies Pep Band, Wind Ensemble, Wind Symphony, Basketball Band, Volleyball Band and Tuba- Euphonium Ensemble. As a member of the Wind Ensemble, he performed at the 2009 CBDNA conference in Austin, TX. Mr. Hjort also performed with the Redcoat Marching Band in 2006 on their tour of China.

Concert Band I has received overall Superior Ratings at UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest under Mr. Hjort's direction. The Winter Guard has also had success, claiming the TECA Scholastic Regional A title in 2014 and placing 4th in 2015. Mr. Hjort's Low Brass students consitently place well at region, area, and state competitions, including 26 First Chair designations in the past 5 years.

Mr. Hjort's professional affiliations include MENC, ITEA, and TMEA. He enjoys spending time with his friends and watching University of Georgia athletics when time permits.
