The Color Guard, sometimes referred to simply as the "Guard," enhances the musical efforts of the band through visual performance. The Guard performs as the primary visual component of the Marching Band in the fall as part of its competitive field production. In the winter and early spring the Guard prepares an indoor production of its own set to recorded music, an activity known as Winter Guard.

The Winter Guard prepares a production lasting usually 4-6 minutes, set to recorded music of the designer's choice. The Winter Guard activity often gives Color Guard members the opportunity to explore even more intricate forms of dance, movement, choreography, and equipment work, as the sole focus becomes anywhere from 5 to 30 members who make up a typical performing Winter Guard unit. The Lopez Winter Guard travels to its own competitions, governed by the organization: Texas Educational Colorguard Association and Winter Guard International (TECA).
