Earlier this year (August, 2007), The History Channel
awarded the Brownsville Historical Association in
Brownsville a grant to partner with Hudson Elementary.
Only 27 organizations nationwide received the Save our
History Community preservation grants. The project, entitled
Keepers of the Crypt involved 4th Grade Students
and parents in Mrs. Kendall’s class.
Students
and their parents attended numerous Saturday sessions at the
Historic Cemetery where they researched grave sites,
completed head stone rubbings, learned about the proper
cleaning and care of cemetery markers, and learned the
importance of historic preservation.
Students
not only became experts on local history, they became
champions for it. Students wrote letters to local, state,
and national leaders seeking support for historic
preservation. The class also created a flyer for cemetery
visitors outlining proper care and etiquette.
The
Students have each created a display board detailing the
lives of individuals in the cemetery. On Saturday, May 17,
2008 at 5:00 PM students dressed in period clothing, will be
providing guided cemetery tours. At 6:00 PM the
history projects will be unveiled at The Old Cemetery
Center.
