On December 15, 2009, Trustees of the Brownsville
Independent School District unanimously selected Brett
Springston as Superintendent of the Rio Grande Valley’s largest school district. Springston had been serving as the district’s Interim Superintendent since January 2009 after a 26-year career in education. Prior to being named Interim Superintendent, Springston worked in BISD as the Assistant Superintendent for Operations and as an Area Assistant Superintendent. Before coming to Brownsville, he was a high school principal in three Texas school districts, Judson, Spring Branch and Lamar Consolidated.

During his tenure in Spring Branch, Springston’s high school was selected as one of three winners of the U.S. Department of Education’s National Awards for Model Professional Development. His background in education also includes experience as a junior high school principal, assistant principal, and coach for both high school and junior college basketball teams.

Brett Springston obtained his Superintendent Certification from Prairie View A & M University. He earned his Master of Education degree from Sul Ross University and holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Texas at Tyler. He is currently seeking to complete a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership.

Springston believes in the value of effective communication as a way of providing instructional leadership. He is often found presenting staff development sessions on the 3 “R” Theory (Rigor, Relevance, Relationships)‚ site based decision making, classroom management, new teacher strategies, and other educational topics of interest to district staff and community members.

Springston is a member of several professional organizations including Rotary International.
