Dear Friends:
There is so much to celebrate! The Texas Education Agency (TEA) recently announced that Brownsville ISD has been named a 2010 State Recognized District by meeting the absolute standard criteria. In addition, all 52 BISD schools, 100% of all campuses, are rated Exemplary and Recognized for 2010. The district’s academic progress, which earned the prestigious 2008 Broad Prize, continues to garner academic accolades.
It was also recently announced that three BISD high schools, Hanna, Lopez, and Pace, are the recipients of $18 million in Texas Title I Priority Schools (TTIPS) grants. Only 70 of these highly competitive grants were awarded in Texas this year.
Two new secondary schools, Edward Manzano, Jr. Middle School and Veterans Memorial High School, will open to students this school year. The opening of these two schools fulfills the promises made to our community in the 2006 school bond.
Our district continues to support an employee wellness program designed to improve health and reduce costs. The district’s green initiative is gaining momentum and is adding additional components to incorporate recycling with a comprehensive student environmental curriculum.
I am so enthused about the good things happening in our district. I hope I get an opportunity to visit with you in the coming weeks.
Regards,

Brett Springston
Superintendent of Schools
