Dear BISD Friends:
Brownsville ISD has much to brag about with the start of the 2009 school year.
The district’s academic achievement, which earned the 2008 Broad Prize, continues to improve. A total of 41 schools or 84% of all campuses earned Exemplary/Recognized labels in the state’s 2009 accountability system. Southmost Elementary school garnered a prestigious National Blue Ribbon designation and Paredes Elementary was awarded a spot on the distinguished Texas Business and Education Coalition’s Honor Roll.
Two new, magnificent elementary schools, Pullam and Peña, recently opened to students. Another school, Keller Elementary, will open in just a few months. I can assure you that we will continue to fulfill the promises made to our community in the 2006 bond campaign.
The district has kicked off two new programs. BISD employees will soon have access to a comprehensive wellness program. The goal of this initiative is to improve our employees’ health while reducing insurance costs. Our going green initiative is already underway and gaining momentum. Paper gathered throughout the district is being recycled in a coordinated campaign. This has also allowed us to introduce an environmental curriculum to support our recycling efforts.
We are enthused about our students, schools and employees. Thank you for playing an active role in your child’s education. I hope that I get an opportunity to visit with you soon about the great things happening in BISD.
