The Mock trial
competition is a fun and challenging way to
provide students with an operational
understanding of the judicial system and
legal processes. Mock Trial is a popularly
accepted educational experience that allows
students to develop communication skills,
critical thinking, quick analysis, and oral
advocacy. Attorneys and judges in our
community continue as
advocates for this program by serving as
consultants for students,
organizing mock competitions, and providing
their courtrooms for local competitions.
For several years Brownsville High School
students have been involved in Regional
Competition sponsored by the Dallas Bar
Association. This competition is held on
President's Day Holiday Weekend every
February. Teams of 6-10 students receive an
official case packet and compete at the
regional level. The winning teams advance
to Sate Finals and possibly the
National High School Mock Trial Competition.
As the Mock Trial concept has grown in
popularity among students and teachers,
plans are underway for the same kind of
competition among Middle School students in
BISD. Much of the training, planning, and
competition will be taken on by High School
Mock Trial Teams. This new endeavor will
enhance the strength of the program through
vertical alignment.
