The professional development component is designed to provide teachers with the necessary knowledge to meet the special needs of gifted learners. All staff, including administrators and counselors who have authority for program decisions, must receive a minimum of 30 core hours of professional development that includes nature and needs (6 hours), identification and assessment (6 hours), differentiating the curriculum (12 hours), and creativity and instructional strategies (6 hours) for gifted learners.

Teachers who will be
teaching identified gifted and talented
students must receive these 30 hours before
providing services to gifted students. All
kindergarten teachers are required to obtain
this training.
An additional 6 on-going hours of professional development in gifted and talented education is required annually (June - May) for elementary teachers teaching identified gifted and talented students. Secondary teachers need 6 on-going hours of professional development in gifted and talented education and 6 on-going hours of professional development in Pre-AP/AP.
