HEB Read 3

Help shape a child's mind by reading to them three times a week. When you read to a child they develop the reading skills they need to succeed in school. Sadly, not all children have books in their homes. That's why in 2011 H-E-B launched Read 3.

In the past three years, H-E-B has donated nearly 3 million books to children in need. Help us collect another million during our book drive September 17 to September 30. Stop by your H-E-B and donate new or gently used children's books at donations bins throughout the store. We'll also have book reading events and special offers.

United Way

United Way's model focuses on supportive communities, effective schools and strong families — strategies and approaches rooted in research. Tackling the education challenge requires reframing education on a birth to 21 continuum.

As the lead organization for Brownsville's Partners for Postsecondary Success, we embrace the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's goal of doubling the number of low-income young adults with postsecondary credentials leading to living wage employment by 2025.

United Way of Southern Cameron County has many education initiatives. You can read more about our work at these links:

The goal of the Texas Literacy Initiative (TLI) is to ensure that every Texas child is strategically prepared for college and career literacy demands by high school graduation. The TLI integrates and aligns early language and preliteracy skills for children from infancy to school entry. For students in grades K–12, the TLI emphasizes reading and writing instruction.

A local collaborative of secondary schools, elementary schools, and the feeder preschools and programs that serve a community’s children is called a “Literacy Line.” Integrating and aligning language development and literacy instruction across the infancy through grade 12 continuum requires communication and collaboration. Discussions among educators within a Literacy Line should focus on instruction that has been shown to work. This page provides information and state-endorsed resources for building a solid foundation of research-based instructional practices, systems, and guidelines. Join the TLI mailing list and receive updates as more information becomes available.

The Write for Texas collection of resources is available to all secondary English language arts and reading and content area teachers to support effective writing instruction. The resources include critical background knowledge, activities, and videos that relate to the guiding principles of effective writing instruction. Participants learn and apply teaching techniques to support all students in writing.

The Texas Education Agency—in conjunction with the TLI Leadership Team, which includes 20 regional education service centers, the Institute for Public School Initiatives at The University of Texas at Austin, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, and the Vaughn Gross Center for Reading and Language Arts at The University of Texas at Austin—collaborate with Literacy Lines to meet the goals of the TLI grant. A Literacy Line is a vertical collaborative among feeder-pattern campuses within a local education agency and early childhood education providers, which may include Early Head Start; Head Start; public, private, or nonprofit licensed child care providers; and public prekindergarten programs.
