Rosario Peña was named the district’s new Purchasing Administrator on July 1, 2004. Ms. Peña comes to the Purchasing Department with 18 years of financial experience. She started her career with BISD in 1988 as a Federal Funds/Property Tax Accountant. In 1994 she was promoted to Finance Coordinator and in 1998 she became the district’s Investment Administrator. Ms. Peña was born and raised in Brownsville, TX. She is a 1981 graduate of Gladys Porter High School and she received her Bachelors of Business Administration in 1985 from Pan American University-Brownsville where she majored in Management and minored in Accounting. Professionally, Ms. Peña is a member of the Valley Association of School Business Officials, the Texas Association of School Business Officials, on the Board of Trustees for the Texas Cooperative Liquid Assets Securities System Trust, and was named Brownsville’s 1988 Young Career Woman of the Year. Ms. Peña is an active member in her community. In 2000 she received an appointment by Mayor Blanca Vela to the Greater Brownsville Incentives 4A Corporation Board, where she served as First Vice-Chair. She currently serves as Chair of the University of Texas-Brownsville/Texas Southmost College Accounting Technology Advisory Council. She is currently a member of Leadership Brownsville and past executive board member, member of the Brownsville Junior Service League, a volunteer for Odyssey Health Care, Inc., and Past President and Vice-President of Brownsville’s Southmost Business and Professional Women.
