THE VELA BAND RANKS IN STATE FINALS

CONSISTENTLY OVER TWO DECADES!!!

On Sunday, July 24th the Texas Music Educators Association held the final round of the 2011-2012 State Honor Band competition in San Antonio, Texas.   The honor band competition has become increasingly competitive of the decades and only the very best groups in the state earn a spot in the state finals.  We are proud to announce that the Vela Middle School band program advanced and ranked 11th in the final state round of honor band competition.

Since Vela Middle School opened in 1990 the Vela Band program has advanced to the state level competition a record 8 times!   No other middle school band program in the Valley have ever ranked at the state level with this consistency.  It is an exceptional achievement by this fine BISD band program to have maintained state level performance standards for two decades.

The Vela Band is under the direction of Mario Sarmiento.  Congratulations to the students, parents and directors of Vela Middle School Bands on their continued state level achievements.

BISD State Honor Band History 1965-Present

2011 BISD BANDS ACHIEVE HISTORIC

SUCCESS AT UIL CONTEST

Below are the results from the 2011 Band UIL Concert and Sight-Reading contest.  This year we had more bands participate and earn 1st divisions than at any point in the history of Brownsville!  This year BISD had an all time record total of 34 bands eligible and participating in UIL competition.  Of the bands that competed, 32 received UIL awards, 20 earned a UIL Sweepstakes award and 14 bands improved their ratings over last year.

The BISD Instrumental Music Department also provided an evaluation performance for 11 bands that were not suited for or eligible for UIL competition.  This evaluation performance provided these students with an opportunity to critically analyze their mastery of the TEKS of the Instrumental Music curriculum.  In total, 45 bands, servicing approximately 2,100 students in grades 7-12 were evaluated either internally or through UIL competition.  While BISD has always had a strong band program, these results are the best the district has ever produced.

It has been well documented that success in Instrumental Music is directly connected to the development of higher level thinking skills and problem solving.  As clearly illustrated by these results, the Instrumental Music Department is providing effective high quality instruction for the children of Brownsville.  This has a direct and positive impact on student success in TAKS testing and academic achievement.  Congratulations to the BISD Band students, directors and parents.
