KBSD - TV
The Evolution of an Instructional Television Station
The Brownsville Independent School District entered the electronic
information highway in 1980 with the development of a high-impact,
powerful educational and informational tool - television. 1980
KBSD - TV was originally formed as Instructional Television (ITV)
in 1980 with a single studio that was used as a video production
facility. The original funding of ITV was secured from a three-year
federal bilingual grant and was used to produce El Arco Iris.
1983
After the grant expired, the district used local funds to continue
the ITV operation of producing instructional videos that were now
used by the entire district.
1989
In 1989, KBSD - TV secured a local channel on the cable television
system and began its programming with an electronic bulletin board
and free programs available from a variety of sources that included
both government and private sources.
1990's
As the station grew, KBSD began to produce a higher percentage of
its programming and its staff increased to include a scriptwriter,
photographers, video editors, production technicians, clerical personnel
and a station administrator.
1997
KBSD-TV Facilities were moved from the orgional site at Central
Middle School to the Technology section at Gladys Porter High School.
1998
With the addition of media technology programs in the district curriculum,
KBSD assumed the duty of a lead instructor for students in these
programs. During the school year, KBSD instructs and mentors students
at its studios in videography, editing, scriptwriting and broadcast
engineering. KBSD staffers work shoulder to shoulder with students
in all phases of station operation with a goal of preparing students
to continue their education in their pursuit of a media technology
career.
2001
In the spring, KBSD-TV upgraded its outgoing signal from a standard
copper coaxial cable to fiber optics to meet the challenge of modern
technological demands.
2002
KBSD-TV incorporated a computer assisted automated transmission
system that allows the station to transmit programming during the
weekends instead of just relying on the electronic bulletin board.
KBSD-TV initiated phase one of making an equipment transition from
analog to digital protocol.
2003
A modified phase two of the original digital transition was initiated.
This upgraded some of the digital equipment in the areas of production
and transmission. The number of VCRs was doubled in the transmission
system
2004
With the addition of the new digital video equipment, KBSD-TV increased
its local studio and field digital productions and program playback
capabilities. The secondary non-linear editing was re-established.
2005
Two new non-linear editing systems were obtained to replace an obsolete
non-linear editor and to upgrade and existing non-linear editor.
Preliminary tests were conducted to utilize BISD’s network
to video stream programming from remote areas of the district.
2006
A new character generator unit was incorporated in the manual and
automatic transmission system that will improve our programming
transmission and our electronic bulletin board. The first live transmission
via video streaming from a remote area was conducted.
2007
Phase one of making a transition into the high definition digital
camera system will be initiated.
