2016 BISD  BANDS ACHIEVE RECORD

 SUCCESS AT  UIL CONTEST

Below are the results from the 2016 Band UIL Concert and Sight-Reading contests. BISD had a record matching total of 36 bands eligible and participating in UIL competition.   Of the bands that competed, a record 33 received UIL awards and a new record number of 23 bands earning a UIL Sweepstakes award!

The BISD Instrumental Music Department also provided an evaluation performance for 12 bands that were not suited for or eligible for UIL competition. This evaluation performance provided these students with an opportunity to critically analyze their mastery of the TEKS of the Instrumental Music curriculum.

In total, a record 48 bands, servicing approximately 2,100 students in grades 7-12 were evaluated either internally or through UIL competition. While BISD has always had a strong band program, these results show the bands today are highly successful.

It has been well documented that success in Instrumental Music is directly connected to the development of higher level thinking skills and problem solving. As clearly illustrated by these results, the Instrumental Music Department is providing effective high quality instruction for the children of Brownsville. This has a direct and positive impact on student success in STARR testing and academic achievement. Congratulations to the BISD Band students, directors and parents.

Congratulations to the BISD Band students and their directors on their historic success!

On Saturday, October 25th the UIL 6A Area G Marching Band Competition was held at Gustafson Stadium and Farris Stadium San Antonio, Texas.    There were 40 bands from San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Laredo and the Rio Grande Valley that competed for a spot in the 2014 UIL 6A State Marching Band Competition.    In finals competition the Hanna Golden Eagle Band and the Lopez Lobo Band both earned a spot in the 2014 UIL 6A State Marching Band Championship.  In finals, the Lopez Lobo Band ranked 4th and the Hanna Golden Eagle Band ranked 6th.  The State event will be held on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio.

Brownsville’s band programs once again proved to be the most successful in the Rio Grande Valley by achieving the following successes: 4 bands competed at the Area event, 3 bands advanced to finals and 2 Brownsville bands are advancing to the UIL 5A State Marching Band Championship.   No other city in South Texas had as many bands competing at the Area contest or has more bands advancing to the State level.
