The Brownsville Independent School District has a long tradition of excellence in our Band Programs. Since the 1940’s Brownsville Bands have consistently achieved success at UIL and TMEA regional, Area, and State Levels. We currently have over 4,000 students enrolled in the BISD band programs. We also enjoy a very motivated and experienced staff of 65 band directors in the district. The staff works well as a team and has a very collaborative relationship. Working with the students, campuses and community our band programs strive to ensure the best education for our students.

2016 BISD BANDS ACHIEVE RECORD
SUCCESS AT UIL CONTEST
Below are the results from the 2016 Band UIL Concert and Sight-Reading contests. BISD had a record matching total of 36 bands eligible and participating in UIL competition. Of the bands that competed, a record 33 received UIL awards and a new record number of 23 bands earning a UIL Sweepstakes award!
The BISD Instrumental Music Department also provided an evaluation performance for 12 bands that were not suited for or eligible for UIL competition. This evaluation performance provided these students with an opportunity to critically analyze their mastery of the TEKS of the Instrumental Music curriculum.
In total, a record 48 bands, servicing approximately 2,100 students in grades 7-12 were evaluated either internally or through UIL competition. While BISD has always had a strong band program, these results show the bands today are highly successful.

BISD DRUMLINES AND WINTERGUARDS ARE RAISING THE BAR IN 2016
This year all 6 BISD high school band programs have drumlines competing in statewide competition. These contests took place from January through April and culminated in a state and regional finals competition in April.

This year marks the first time all 6 high schools have had BISD colorguard units have had participating in winterguard competition. On April 2nd the Texas Educational Colorguard Association held their state regional finals competition at PSJA North High School in Pharr, Texas. We are proud to announce that the Lopez High School Winterguard earned 1ST PLACE, REGIONAL CHAMPIONS in conference Scholastic Regional A.

BISD BAND STUDENTS EARN
On January 9, 2016, the Texas Music Educators Association held the Area G Audition to select the 2016 All-State Band members. The BISD Department of Fine Arts is proud to announce that 25 Brownsville fine arts Band students earned chairs in these prestigious ensembles, ranking them in the top 2% of music students in Texas! These students will perform in the All-State ensembles at the TMEA convention in San Antonio on February 13, 2016.
In order to earn a place at the state level, the students went through district, region, and area auditions. They competed against students from Houston, Corpus Christi, Laredo and the Rio Grande Valley. BISD Band students earned more chairs than any other school district in all of TMEA Area G by capturing nearly half of all positions available!! They also earned a total of 10 1st chair seats!!!

BROWNSVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS
DOMINATE ALL-REGION MIDDLE SCHOOL JAZZ AUDITION
On Thursday, February 4th TMEA Region 28 held the eighth annual audition for the TMEA Region 28 Middle School Jazz ensemble. Over 120 students from Middle Schools across the Valley competed for one of only 40 chairs available. We are proud to announce that BISD Band students earned a record total of 20 out of the 40 chairs available. BISD Band students also earned 2 1st chair positions out of 9 available.
The results were as follows: Besteiro Middle School - 1, Faulk Middle School - 1, Lucio Middle School - 5, Manzano Middle School - 3, Stell Middle School - 8, and Stillman Middle School had 2 students earn a chair in the ensemble.

BISD Middle School Band students sweep the 2016 TMEA Region 28 All-region Band audition! On Saturday, January 16th the BISD Middle School bands earned a total of 168 All-Region Band chairs and 10 of 16 1st chair positions! Collectively our BISD middle school band students also increased the number of all-region chairs earned by over 15% from last year! Also, more than half of our BISD middle school programs increased their results from last year.

On Tuesday, December 8th Band students from TMEA region 28 competed for a chair in the 2015 TMEA 9th Grade All-Region Band. We are proud to announce that BISD students earned 43 of the 85 chairs available! Over half of the chairs available in the 2015 9th Grade All-Valley band were earned by BISD Band Students. BISD students also earned 11 out of 17 1st chairs available!
The 9th Grade All-Valley Band and High School All-Valley Bands will perform on Friday, December 11th, 7:00pm at the Harlingen CISD Performing Arts Center.

On Saturday, November 14th Band students from TMEA region 28 competed for a chair in the 2015-2016 TMEA All-Region High School Bands. We are proud to announce that in 2015 the BISD High School Band programs have once again set the standard. With a total of 135 BISD High School Band students earning chairs and 179 earning TMEA District patches, the Brownsville Band programs continue to set the standard in our region! More than half of all of the chairs available in the 2015-2016 TMEA Region 28 All-District bands were earned by BISD students. Our BISD Band students also earned a record setting 16 of the 21 1st chair positions!! Congratulations to the BISD Band students and their directors on these outstanding results.

On Tuesday, October 20th the TMEA Region 28 Orchestra auditions were held at Harlingen High School. BISD Band students competed against 184 of the top players from across the region for one of the 27 chairs available in the All-Region Orchestra. Band students from the Brownsville Band programs earned 15 of the 27 chairs available with 7 out of 11 first chairs. 12 of these students will also now advance to the TMEA Area audition where they will compete for a chair in the TMEA All-State organizations. The All-Region Orchestra will perform on November 21st at the Harlingen CISD Performing Arts Center.

AT UIL PIGSKIN MARCHING COMPETITION!!!!
On Saturday, October 17, 2015 marching bands from UIL Region 28 competed at the annual UIL Pigskin Jubilee Marching Contest. The bands represented their schools and communities with outstanding performances. 24 bands competed and were awarded UIL division ratings for the level of mastery demonstrated in their performances. These ratings are on a scale on 1 to 5, with a 1 or 1st division being the highest rating available.
Each of the BISD Band programs gave exceptional performances as they represented the Brownsville School District, their programs, schools and the city of Brownsville in UIL competition. We are proud to announce that 5 BISD Bands earned 1st division, superior ratings at the UIL Pigskin Marching Contest!!!!
We also wish the best of luck to the 2 BISD 5A Bands, Pace and Porter which have earned at spot in the 2015 UIL Area G marching contest. This event will take place this Saturday, October 24th in Calallen, Texas. At this contest our 5A bands will compete for a spot in the 2015 UIL State Marching Band Championship to be held on Tuesday, November 3rd.

GRAND CHAMPION AWARD
The Veterans Charger Drum Line competed in the Roma Gladiator Outdoor Drum Line Competition in Roma, Texas on Saturday, September 19th. The Drum Line under the direction of Mr. Philip De La Fuente competed against thirteen other drum lines from accross the Rio Grande Valley. The Drum Line earned First place in their division earning them a spot in Finals competition later that evening. Competing against the top seven drum lines of the contest, the Veterans Drum Line brought home several awards including Best Tenor Line, Best Bass Line and Best Cymbal Line. At the end of the contest the Chargers Drumline were named the OVER ALL GRAND CHAMPIONS!!!

NATIONAL WIND BAND HONORS CONTEST
The 2014-2015 Oliveira Symphonic Band
Today, the Foundation of Music Education announced the results of the Mark of Excellence/National Wind Band Honors Contest. The Oliveira Symphonic Band was named a Commended National Winner in class AA. The recordings that were submitted were “Romanian Folk Dances” by Bela Bartok, and “Undertow” by John Mackey. In addition 7 Outstanding Soloist awards were presented to members of the ensemble. They were Joely Gonzalez on Flute, Ivan Castro on Oboe and Clarinet, Alondra Serrato on piccolo , Matthew Padilla on Clarinet, Juan Angel Montemayor on Alto Saxophone, and Anakin Martinez on Tenor Saxophone.
The Mark of Excellence/National Wind Band Honors Contest through the Foundation of Music Education seeks to recognize and award outstanding achievement in performance by high-school and middle-school bands. Directors across the nation submitted a CD recording of their ensembles from the 2014-15 school year. Adjudicators listened to all of the entries, and provided detailed tape recorded comments as well as written comments. Winners will also be recognized in regional and/or national publications and at national and regional conventions. National winners and Commended winners will receive a trophy. The critiques and the compilation recordings from this competition are very helpful in improving the performance of bands nation wide, and also highlights quality band literature.

OLIVEIRA RANKS TOP 5 IN STATE FINALS!!!

On Thursday, July 23rd, the Texas Music Educators Association held the 2015-2016 State Honor Band Finals competition in San Antonio, Texas. We are proud to announce that the Oliveira middle school band, under the direction of Mr. Gaspar Garcia, has ranked 5th in the TMEA State Honor Band Finals! Congratulations to the Oliveira Band for their hard work which has placed them as one of the top 5 CCC middle school bands in the entire State of Texas for 2015-2016!!!
At the area honor band hearing, in 5A, the Pace high school band ranked 3rd in Area competition and are the 1st runner up to state. In middle school conference CCC, Oliveira advanced to the state finals and the Lucio middle school band ranked as the 1st runner up in CCC. In middle school conference CC, the Besteiro middle school band ranked 3rd in Area competition and are also the 1st runner up to state.

BISD percussionists dominated the 2nd annual Brownsville Marimba contest which was held at UTB on Saturday, May 2nd. 14 Marimba players from across the valley competed. We are proud to announce that 5 of the top 7 spots were earned by BISD students. With the top honors, 1st place award going to Rosalinda Ramirez from Veterans Memorial High School.

THE HANNA DRUMLINE ADVANCES TO NATIONAL COMPETITION!!
The Hanna High School Indoor Drum Line has been labeled as the 2015 WGI regional champion for the state of Texas. The Hanna High School Indoor Drum Line placed first at the WGI Houston Regional on March 7, 2015, qualifying them to attend the National Championships in Dayton, Ohio in April. Hanna High School will represent the State of Texas in the Scholastic World Class Division, the highest classification of scholastic competition in the activity. This is the first time that this honor has been bestowed upon any indoor drum line in the Rio Grande Valley competing at the national level. In the entire history of the activity since 1993, only 2 other high schools in the World Class Level have had this honor in Texas. Currently, Hanna High School is ranked third on the national scale in the WGI activity.

THE STELL JAZZ BAND COMPETES IN THE
MCALLEN JAZZ FESTIVAL
At the McAllen Jazz Festival the Stell Jazz Band earned straight first division superior ratings! Several students also won awards as all star performers, they are: alto sax-Lori Saldana, Bari. Sax-Joshua Garcia, trumpet-Alfredo Escobar , outstanding performer-trumpet Alfredo Escobar.

THE BISD BAND STAFF PRESENT A CHRISTMAS CONCERT
The Brownsville ISD Band director's band, know as the Brownsville Winds Symphony, along with several local band directors, community members, and UTB Faculty and Students presented a Christmas Concert on Sunday, December 7, 2014, at 6:30 pm at the Veteran’s Memorial Early College High School Auditorium.
Congratulations to all on this outstanding inaugural performance of the Brownsville Winds Symphony which is conducted by Mr. Albert Lo, Director Bands at the University of Texas Brownsville.

BROWNSVILLE BANDS ADVANCE TO THE
UIL 6A STATE MARCHING BAND CHAMPIONSHIP
On Saturday, October 25th the UIL 6A Area G Marching Band Competition was held at Gustafson Stadium and Farris Stadium San Antonio, Texas. There were 40 bands from San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Laredo and the Rio Grande Valley that competed for a spot in the 2014 UIL 6A State Marching Band Competition. In finals competition the Hanna Golden Eagle Band and the Lopez Lobo Band both earned a spot in the 2014 UIL 6A State Marching Band Championship. In finals, the Lopez Lobo Band ranked 4th and the Hanna Golden Eagle Band ranked 6th. The State event will be held on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio.
Brownsville’s band programs once again proved to be the most successful in the Rio Grande Valley by achieving the following successes: 4 bands competed at the Area event, 3 bands advanced to finals and 2 Brownsville bands are advancing to the UIL 5A State Marching Band Championship. No other city in South Texas had as many bands competing at the Area contest or has more bands advancing to the State level.
In Prelims, the Veterans Charger Band ranked 4th and advanced to finals competition! The Veterans Charger Band has advanced to Area finals every time they have competed in UIL Area marching competition! The Rivera Raider Band made their sixth consecutive appearance in the event. Both the Veterans and Rivera Bands gave exceptional performances.

On Saturday, September 20th the Veteran's Memoial High School drumline competed in the Robert Vela High School Drumline competition in Edinburg, Texas. This year the Veteran's drumline performed their show entitled "The Explorer". The drumline ranked 1st place in 6A as well as earning Best Tenor line, best Cymbal line (*2nd consecutive year) and Outstanding overall drumline.

DRUM AND BUGLE CORPS
Vidal Martinez, junior band student at Pace High School, was recently selected into the world champion Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps, located in Rosemont, Illinois. Vidal went through a series of auditions, and was selected from hundreds of candidates from around the country for this prestigious organization. Vidal will tour the US with the corps this summer, culminating in a performance at the Drum Corps Internationals competition held in Indianapolis, IN.

Lopez High School Director of Bands
George Trevino, director of the Lopez High School Lobo Band, has been awarded the Texas A&M University Inspiration Award for Exceptional Secondary Education. The award recognizes excellence in teaching at the high school level that inspires Texas A&M graduates, challenging them while preparing them to excel at the collegiate level and beyond. The award includes $2,000 to Mr. Trevino, $1,000 to Lopez High School and travel and accommodations for him to accept the award at Texas A&M.
THE FORT SAM HOUSTON BRASS ENSEMBLES
PERFORM FOR BISD BAND STUDENTS AND STAFF
On Friday, October 22nd the Fort Sam Houston Brass Quintet and Trombone quartet gave an exclusive performance for BISD Band students at the CAB auditorium. Over 150 students attended the performance of this exceptional ensemble. The BISD students had an opportunity to speak with the members of the ensemble after their performance. (pictured below) Special thanks to the Fort Sam Houston Army Medical Command Band for making this performance possible.
