Ruben Cortez, Jr., Brownsville native and newly elected State Board of Education (SBOE) Representative District 2, was officially sworn in at Porter High School, his alma mater, on January 15, by his mother, Linda Salazar, a local Justice of the Peace. Cortez is the first SBOE representative from Brownsville and only the second person to hold the District 2 position in the Board’s current configuration. A packed audience of Porter students, BISD employees, and local dignitaries were in attendance to witness the ceremony.
